Students at Mountain Pointe High School are discovering that joining the school's Salsa Club can have its advantages.

The club, which now has about 40 students, has grown from only a handful of students five years ago. Club members will say the growth is no accident.

"You get to meet and hang out with people, exercise, and you learn something that not many people know how to do," said club president Ty Brown. "It's just really fun."

Salsa is a fast-paced dance for pairs, which involves quick steps with a lot of dipping and twirling, that originates from Cuba.

The Mountain Pointe students practice twice per week to learn the rhythms and steps that are the basis of the dance.

"Out of other dances, salsa is different because you have a partner and it's more hands-on, you're doing more lifts and other moves," club member Tatum Buck said.

The club is choreographed by Davey Trujillo of Dance Studio 111, who has worked with the students for the past several years. There are plans in the works to compete against other schools.

The club will be hosting an information session at the school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Mountain Pointe's cafeteria.

The public is invited to attend, watch the students perform, and even take a lesson if they are inclined. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5.

The money raised will go toward costumes and props to be used in performances at school assemblies.

"Performing in front of the whole school is pretty exciting," Brown said. "For people who want to join the club, I would say go for it. It's always nice to meet new people and be part of something."
