The 14th BARKtoberkfest, the annual party for dogs and their owners, is Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Gilbert Town Center.

The free event — though some activities require a small donation — is put on by the Friends for Life Animal Rescue in Gilbert and features live entertainment, dog washes, contests for pet-owner lookalike, trick, costume and much more.

Kathy Dunham, Friends for Life Animal Rescue president, said 20-25 dogs should be available for adoption on Saturday. Twelve adoptions took place at last year’s event. There also will be a parade for dogs adopted at past events.

“What we’re really hoping for is more of the same,” Dunham said. “This has always been a fun and successful event for us.”

BARKtoberfest, voted the “Best Place to Hang Out With Your Dog” by East Valley Tribune readers in 2012, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gilbert Town Center, 50 E. Civic Center Drive, at the southeast corner of Gilbert and Warner roads.

More than 7,500 people attended last year’s event, and about $8,000 was raised. Funds raised from the event aid in saving the lives of homeless dogs and cats.

Friends for Life Animal Rescue, located at 143 W. Vaughn Ave. in Gilbert, is a nonprofit, volunteer-run, no-kill shelter dedicated to ending the suffering of homeless dogs and cats.

All dogs in attendance must be leashes, fixed and vaccinated.
