Arizona State University Changemaker Innovation Challenge has announced ARKHumanity as the grand prize winner of $10,000 seed money. ARKHumanity is a technology that scans Twitter for specific messages used by people in suicide crisis and connects the originator of the post with a trained volunteer and/or behavioral health expert for immediate support.
Compelled by the fact that one person dies by suicide every 13.3 minutes, the creators of ARKHumanity believe that simply responding to a person in distress as an indication that someone hears them and is concerned for their well-being can be life saving. ARKHumanity extends this effort further by connecting people to resources such as a lifeline chat or hotline which can help mitigate immediate risk and plan for further treatment.
The $10,000 prize from Changemaker Challenge will be used to help develop the technology’s infrastructure and to introduce it to local, state and national organizations at conferences.
