As the school year winds down, teachers at Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School wanted to host a community event that showcased some of the current projects students are working on.

Called Pride in Learning, the first time event took place on Thursday at the school where hundreds of parents gathered and walked about the halls to see some colorful and interactive projects made by their children.

“The event was a celebration of learning,” said teacher Sheri Zastrow, who helped coordinate the event. “It was the culmination of this year’s work and kind of gave a glimpse into what we have done all years.”

The feel of the event was almost that of a science fair, as some of the older grades presented science experiments, but younger grades did everything from book reports to art pieces to historical research projects.

The entire school participated in the event on April 26, which included a performance by the Monte Vista choir.

The art portion of Pride in Learning was highlighted by the Art Masterpiece show, which featured works from different classrooms around the school. Art Masterpiece was made possible by the Monte Vista Parent-Teacher Organization, which raised funds for supplies and visited classrooms once each month to work on an art project. The 13 classrooms that participated, as it was an opt-in program for classroom teachers, showed off their work at the event.

“We bring all the supplies and teach them a lot about artists and the world,” said Rima Gettemy, parent and head of Art Masterpiece. “The kids love it.”

It was the first time the group presented a school-wide art show. Gettemy said the group’s service to the kids and art comes at a good time, when just last year Kyrene modified the way art was implemented to students.
