Taste of Kyrene

At the inaugural year in 2011, the Taste of Kyrene brought in $45,000 for the Kyrene Foundation, which provides goods and services to district families in need.

The Kyrene School District will be hosting its fourth annual Taste of Kyrene and will be open to all community members in efforts to support the Kyrene Foundation.

The Kyrene Foundation is an organization that assists families throughout the district with essential needs to continue on throughout the school year.

During Taste of Kyrene, The Kyrene Altadeña Jazz Band will be welcoming visitors with jazz on the patio at registration and a DJ will be providing music in the main room by the dance floor all evening, said event co-chair Shari Vogel.

“We live in a seemingly affluent community; however there are families in need at all 25 Kyrene schools. Every community is affected by poverty, and Ahwatukee, Tempe and Chandler are no exceptions. There are currently 350 homeless students in the Kyrene School District,” Vogel said. “As members of this community it is important for us make sure the students and their families are receiving the support they need to get back on their feet. These children deserve to be given the tools they need to be successful in school and to lead happy, healthy lives.”

There will be a silent auction with items donated by the community and supportive local businesses as well as baskets donated by many of the Kyrene schools.

Items to bid on include estate planning, sports tickets and suites, gift cards, etc., Vogel said.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $50 at the door. They can be purchased online at www.tasteofkyrene.org.

“Arizona schools have seen decreases in funding year after year. The Kyrene Foundation helps make up for shortfalls by funding initiatives such as employee and student recognition, character education, teacher mini-grants, scholarships for after school enrichment programs and summer programs for students in need,” Vogel said.

The fourth annual Taste of Kyrene will take place on Friday, Feb. 28, at Foothills Golf Club 2201 E. Clubhouse Drive.
