Desert Vista High School’s Science Bowl team recently captured the state championship at the 2014 Arizona Regional Science Bowl, competing alongside 32 different schools across the state.

The team is composed of four Desert Vista students: senior Rajeev Parvathala, juniors Gen Fitzgerald and Connor Vuong, and sophomore Sanjeev Murty.

The Science Bowl Team was fighting on the ropes during the day-long competition where they were able to defeat undefeated team Brophy College Preparatory twice to be crowned champions.

Parvathala said it was a great experience to be able to win the state championship, and was exceptionally special considering it’s his final year at Desert Vista.

Each competitor was assigned different sections to study for the competition ranging from astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, earth and general sciences.

The team also benefited from participating in different quiz bowls at the school where they were able to sharpen their skills on answering questions and working on their buzzer responses.

According to the Arizona Regional Science Bowl press release, the regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science, improve awareness of career options in science and technology, and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.

Teacher Birgit Musheno said the team showed resounding resilience during the competition and pushed through adversity when falling behind.

“They exhibited incredible depth of science knowledge, strategic collaborative skills and also a huge amount of resilience and determination, in an exciting come-from-behind victory,” Musheno said.

Since winning state, the Desert Vista Science Bowl Team was awarded an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C., to compete in the National Science Bowl competition at the end of April.

The team is currently hard at work preparing for Nationals by brushing up on different areas of science and building on their mental toughness for the competition.
