Connecting to Serve’s fall community service event will be hosted at Mountain Park Community Church in Ahwatukee Foothills on Oct. 27.

The church, near 24th Street and Pecos Road, will host about 35 non-profit organizations, music, refreshments, and an anticipated 200 residents.

Each spring and fall, Connecting to Serve aims to provide service opportunities and connections to nonprofit organizations for people seeking to volunteer.

“It’s all about giving back and creating change,” said Connecting to Serve’s co-coordinator Sheila Coonen.

The organization began four years ago as an outreach tool for participants of Mountain View Lutheran Church’s Alpha program. In the program, participants learn how they can make a difference.

Coonen said the goal of the organization is to get people working with one another. As their motto states, “We’re better together,” the group has helped support hungry families in the Kyrene School District, planted community gardens and works with senior centers, according to Coonen.

“There is a desire to work together,” Coonen said. “Ahwatukee is phenomenal for that.”

Along with the nonprofit organizations, the community volunteer event will also host other churches, schools, and service clubs on Oct. 27.

Mountain Park Community Church is located at 2408 E. Pecos Road and the free event will be from 9 a.m. to noon.
