A landscaper was sent to the hospital after being attacked by a swarm of bees near a shopping center at 48th Street and Warner Road on Wednesday.

Around 8 a.m. the landscaper was mowing the grass on the edge of the Bashas’ shopping center at the southeast corner of 48th Street and Warner Road. The mower apparently disturbed a hive of bees in a palm tree and the bees attacked, according to Sgt. Joel Tranter of the Phoenix Police Department.

The 30–year-old man ran through sprinklers but was stung over 100 times. The Phoenix Fire Department responded and transported the victim to Chandler Regional Hospital for treatment. The man was awake and responsive when transported and his injuries were not expected to be life threatening, Tranter said.

The fire department used foam to kill the bees and remove the hive. The parking lot was closed off for some time as the bees were removed.

There have been several reports of dangerous bees in Ahwatukee this summer. Experts recommend people stay far away from the bees and call a professional company for help removing any hives.
