Part of a month-long project, kindergartners at Summit School of Ahwatukee heard from a U.S. Air Force pilot about flying on Friday.

The group of about 30 students from the school’s two kindergarten classes sat and watched a video of fighter planes in action and talked with Col. Brent Vosseller, a brother of one of the classroom’s teachers.

Vosseller is currently stationed at the Aviano Air Base in Italy, and has served a total of four trips with the Air Force.

The students sat and asked Vosseller questions about how he flies planes, how high he goes, how fast, and if he ever gets scared.

“I know that this is one of the jobs they aren’t really exposed to, usually they see policemen and firemen on a regular basis,” Vosseller said. “It’s good to come and talk to them.”

He also touched on how he needs good sleep, healthy eating habits, and not too much TV to do his job well and stay focused.

Aiming to steer clear of the evident war, fighting, and death aspect of his service, the young, bright minds still asked him questions about being in a real war.

“It’s my job to keep people from hurting you,” Vosseller explained to the students. “I have been in a real war, yes, more than I wish.”

On Jan. 31, both kindergarten classes at Summit will present their career projects to parents and visitors, complete with research and costumes.

Summit School of Ahwatukee is located at 4515 E. Muirwood Drive. For more information, visit summitschoolaz.org.
