New home construction is on the rise in the Valley. A report this past week from the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona shows that single family building permits are up nearly 70 percent so far in 2012.

There were 6,672 permits for the period of January 2011 through November 2011, compared to 11,189 for January 2012 through November 2012, a 68 percent jump.

Gilbert has seen the strongest numbers of building permits, according to a detailed report — released in an email by Grand Canyon Title Agency. There have been 2,331 building permits issued in Gilbert through November, a 64 percent jump from this time last year. For all of 2011, Gilbert saw 1,545 building permits.

Phoenix follows, with 1,533 building permits so far this year, 60 percent above the same period last year.

Queen Creek has seen a nearly 300 percent increase in building permits, with 451 issued through November. For all of 2011, there were just 116 building permits issued.

Home construction is also improving in Mesa, where 808 building permits have been issued, an 80 percent jump over last year. Mesa could see a bigger swing next year as homes start selling at Eastmark, being built on the former GM Proving Grounds.

So far, nine builders have committed to building about 2,000 homes. The first phase of home sales will begin in the spring. More than 15,000 residential units are planned for the 3,200 acre mixed-use community.
