Just months after getting her lemonade stand off the ground to benefit the Arizona Humane Society, middle school student Megan Hansen is lending a hand to the USA Clydesdales Society this weekend.

The nonprofit organization, which began seven years ago, seeks to spread awareness and preserve the world’s remaining 5,500 Clydesdale horses.

Tomorrow, the society is planning its first-ever garage sale fundraiser in Gilbert, bagels and donuts will be available along with lemonade from Hansen’s Humane Lemonade.

“We’re selling everything from housewares to furniture,” said Rebecca Emory, the society’s director. “We’re just hoping it goes well.”

The garage sale’s profits will go directly to the cause of educating people about Clydesdales and their preservation. Some real Clydesdales will also be there to mingle with the community. Along with furniture and housewares, toys, games and other home decor will be for sale.

For Hansen, 12, helping animals and people has been something she’s learned from mom.

“We’re just huge animal lovers,” said Hansen’s mom Petra, who has also volunteered for numerous organizations.

Petra said Hansen started her lemonade stand with a friend earlier this year, and has since been running it by herself.

Fostering a love for animals and helping the community first, she agreed to sell her lemonade at the garage sale and was also part of the Humane Society’s pet telethon last week.

“I think it’s great that she wants to help,” Petra said.

Hansen is a student at Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School, she’s also a Girl Scout along with her younger sister, Erin.

“These girls are just awesome,” said Emory of Hansen and her friends, who also work with the Clydesdale Society.

The garage sale is welcome to all residents of Ahwatukee, and “should be a fun event to bring the family to,” added Petra.

The garage sale will be from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 17208 E. Saragosa Drive in Gilbert.
