Three students recently promoted from the eighth grade at St. John. Bosco Catholic School in Ahwatukee recently received scholarships for private high school tuition, each worth $8,000.
Anthony Cardellini, Brooke Czerniski and Julia Miller were among 40 other students in the Valley who received the scholarships from the Catholic Community Foundation’s Christian Service Award, recognizing Catholic eighth-graders in the Diocese of Phoenix who exemplify Christ-centered behavior, according to the foundation website.
The scholarship is awarded at $2,000 a year for four years of high school within the Diocese of Phoenix. “I was extremely happy when I found out,” said Miller. “The letter came and I’m pretty sure (my mom and I) just started crying.”
Miller has attended St. John Bosco since kindergarten, and has served on student council, this year as class president, as well as a peer-mediator club on campus and the National Charity League.
Hoping to be involved in student council at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix this fall, Miller said she wants to explore the drama department and other clubs at the high school.
“I think since I got the award, I just want to remember it as ‘now that you’re blessed with this, you just keep doing what you’re doing.’”
For Cardellini, his parents couldn’t be more proud.
“We were very, very excited,” said Cardellini’s mom, Alicia. “It was just a wonderful accomplishment for him.”
Cardellini has been an ambassador for Junior Achievement of Arizona since sixth grade.
Also involved in baseball and math tutoring, Alicia said her son’s award was such a “financial blessing,” with Brophy College Preparatory tuition averaging about $13,500 a year.
Cardellini, who was away at a camp, is planning on getting involved in speech and debate as well as mock trials once he gets to campus.
Chosen as the speaker for his eighth-grade promotion, Cardellini talked about his experience at the school that has shaped him and his faith today.
“In grades seven and eight, I found myself in a new world through my community service and academic growth at SJB.” he said. “I could not have asked for a better group of people to spend the last eight grades of my life with.”
