A local middle school student is making the most of her summer days off from school. What Megan Hansen and a friend are doing is sure to benefit animals in need at the Humane Society.

On Saturday mornings, Hansen, who will be a seventh-grader at Akimel A-al Middle School next year, sells lemonade and other items with proceeds going to benefit the Humane Society. She said her family has adopted three dogs from the organization, which was the initial inspiration for the entrepreneurial project.

“We adopted our dogs from the Human Society, including our dog Buster who was abused,” Hansen said. “I know the dogs there need food and toys so I decided I wanted to do something to help the animals that are in the Humane Society now.”

Hansen and her friend have been out there the last couple of months for a few hours every Saturday morning. In between serving customers, they have been making their own chew toys, which will be donated along with the food and other store-bought items at the end of their business adventure.

“We called the Humane Society and asked what they needed,” Hansen said. “We started this just to help them out.”

So far they collected about $50 and have a goal set for $100. Hansen said they plan to do this for the rest of the summer as they try to surpass that goal. They accept donations as well as selling lemonade.

If you would like to help with their effort, Hansen said their stand is usually up from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday mornings on Amberwood Drive, off of 44th Street, just south of Chandler Boulevard.

In the heat of the summer months, the customers benefit too, she said.

“People enjoy the lemonade,” Hansen said. “My friend has a lemon tree and we make our lemonade from scratch.”
