Poodle skirts and saddle shoes will be making a comeback this Saturday, Sept. 17, when the Pecos Senior Center in Ahwatukee Foothills hosts a sock hop for all ages.

"We thought it would be a great idea to get people to know us in the community by just inviting anyone who wanted to come out here and dance," said Terri Roza, supervisor of the Pecos Senior Center.

The dance will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room and the center has hired a DJ to play '50s and '60s music the entire time. Snacks and light refreshments will also be provided.

It will cost $5 to get in, which will go towards future events and activities at the senior center. The sock hop is the first of three fundraisers that will take place in the next three months. There will also be an arts and crafts fair in October and a rummage sale in November.

"The money goes to us doing different things here at the center," Roza said. "The city provides us the center. They provide us with the meals Monday through Friday, but anything else we want to do is funds that we raise."

All money is controlled by an advisory council made up of seniors, called the Site Council.

Roza said there are no plans to teach any dancing at the event but the center does have a line dancing class on Wednesday afternoons that is free to members. She said if they can convince the DJ to play the songs they've learned she's sure the members of the class will be out doing their dance.

Roza said she has gotten a great response from seniors at the center about the upcoming dance.

"They're making poodle skirts. I have a woman who ordered saddle shoes online. They're going to really dress up for this thing," Roza said. "It should just be fun. That's why everybody should come. The community should come just to know the Pecos Community Center is out here. It's just going to be a party for all ages."

The Pecos Community Center is located at 17010 S. 48th St.
