Many of us like to get away from our day-to-day lives and take a short, or maybe not so short, vacation once in awhile. And some of us may want to bring our four-legged loved ones with us. There are many things to take into consideration before you pack your bags and your pooch and head out:

• Would your dog actually enjoy the trip? If you have an outgoing dog that loves to go in the car and experience new things, then the answer would probably be yes. If you have a "home body," more introverted dog who loves to stay at home and is uncomfortable in the car or in new places, then the answer would probably be no.

• Are you going to reach your destination by car or by plane? Bringing a small dog on a plane is fairly easy. However, if you have a larger dog he or she would need to be crated and travel underneath the plane. This can be a very stressful event if your dog is not used to flying and can possibly create many phobias regarding noise, confinement, etc., that can be life-long issues. If you are traveling by car: how long is the drive, will you be staying in hotels on the way to your destination and if so, are they pet friendly?

• Is your final destination and accommodations pet friendly?

• Is your dog stable enough to be left alone (crated or not) in a strange environment?

• Will your dog's food be available to purchase where you are going or do you need to bring enough for the whole trip?

Hopefully after answering these questions you've either made the decision to leave your four-legged friend home or you should be well prepared for a safe, fun trip.
