The pro-life March and Rally is all about celebrating life, according to Ahwatukee Foothills resident Rudy Cavolina.

Cavolina is the general programs director for the state of Arizona for the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men's organization focused on charity worldwide.

"We're also protectors of life," Cavolina said. "We believe life begins at conception and ends at natural death. Thus, which brought us to our annual march every year."

This year was the 39th anniversary on the Supreme Court's decision to legalize abortion. Each year the march is held to peacefully protest that decision. This was Cavolina's fourth year participating in the rally. He's done the march in Phoenix, and he's also participated in California and in Washington, D.C.

"It's something we do just to get the message out to people that the sanctity of life is important," Cavolina said. "We speak for the unborn because they don't have a way to communicate with us."

Cavolina says they believe that more than 50 million Americans have been aborted since the Supreme Court's decision.

The march took place this year on Jan. 22 in downtown Phoenix. It began with a mass at a church before the march and Cavolina says as they march they silently pray and carry placards supporting life.

The Knights of Columbus are just a part of the large group that takes part in the march. Groups like First Way, which gives women considering an abortion a free sonogram so they can see the life they are carrying, and Silent No More, which is a group of women who've had abortions and regret it, also take part in the march in hopes of inspiring women.

This year Congressmen Jeff Flake, Paul Gosar, Ben Quayle and David Schweikert all spoke at the rally.

"The goal is to influence one person at a time and help them understand there is life right from conception," Cavolina said. "I know organizations that can help. Let's find an alternative. Let's make the best decision for you."

More information on the Knights of Columbus and organizations they support can be found on their website at www.kofc.org.
