The Ahwatukee Community Network (ACN) is bringing passionate people together again, this time on the topic of children in foster care.

The ACN will be hosting its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 21 at 3 p.m. at Mountain Park Senior Living, 4475 E. Knox Road. The group will discuss the Foster Care Advocacy Team as well as enjoy a presentation from Chuck Fitzgerald, who was instrumental in helping ACN get started.

ACN brings residents of Ahwatukee together to address critical issues in the community and the Valley. In late-2012 the Foster Advocacy Group was born from a discussion about the needs of foster youth. A group of Ahwatukee residents got together and with help from local service clubs like the Ahwatukee Kiwanis the group supplied Christmas gifts to two local foster group homes.

The group has plans to help more children in the future. There are plans in the works for a large fundraiser on June 7. Those funds will go to purchasing more gifts for more children for Christmas this year.

The group has also identified a huge need for mentors for children aging out of the foster care system. With help from Child Protective Services and other local agencies they will be hosting training meetings for people interested in becoming mentors for youth. The first training will take place at Mountain View Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 8. More information on that training and the needs of foster children will be presented at the Tuesday ACN meeting.

The Foster Care Advocacy Team is always looking for more members passionate about the same cause. They meet once a month on Saturdays. For more information, find them on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/AhwatukeeFoster.
