Sonoran Science Academy in Ahwatukee Foothills is hosting its fourth International Food and Culture Day near the end of the month.

Students and parents will display foods representing about 10 different countries including Russia, Somalia, Lebanon, Korea, Turkey, and Germany among others after school on Friday, Jan. 25.

Classrooms at the public charter school will be set up to represent each country along with activities and other educational materials for students.

The school’s food court will then be open to the public and parents to try the different foods.

“We’re a diverse school, and it’s a fun time to celebrate diversity,” Vice Principal David Coste said.

Though the 4-year-old school is a science academy that focuses on providing a STEM-based education, Coste said implementing culture and arts clubs is the right move.

“We’re really serious about our STEM education, it’s No. 1,” Coste added. “But we can’t be all work and no play.”

In addition to the successful few years of hosting the food and culture day, Coste said the school is working on finalizing a drama club that will be putting on a spring production.

Later in the semester, the school’s music classes will be performing a concert as well as an arts festival featuring a “Turkish Olympiad.”

With several other non-science related clubs like chess, cartooning, yoga and art, students and parents have responded well to the variety of options available at the academy.

“We love it, we think it’s a strength of our school,” Coste said.

The International Food and Culture Day will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 at Sonoran Science Academy, 14647 S. 50th St., Suite 125.
