The Tempe Union High School District is hosting a series of free workshops designed to give parents an overarching view of the challenges that can come in high school along with tips on how to be successful after graduation.

Presented by the No Parent Left Behind University, a program within TUHSD, the series kicked off with "Improve Your Learning & Classroom Performance: Strategies for Success" on Wednesday, Sept. 7, and will continue through the end of the month.

"It is a whole gamut of topics for our tweens and teens," said Kay Cosner, parent community services manager for TUHSD.

Next up will be "ScriptDanger: Sean Morley's (aka Val Venis) Personal Story about the Danger of Prescription Drugs." After a successful wrestling career in what is now the WWE, Morley became a motivational speaker and resides in the Phoenix area.

Another workshop touches on how to find scholarships to help pay for college. And there is one called, "Helping Teens Build Resilience: Bouncing Back From Hard Times," presented by Dr. John Barton, director of the Arizona State University Clinical Psychology Center.

"I think everyone, as human beings, we have all experienced hard times," Barton said. "Competence and confidence are born from experience. One of the things I tell them is when you solve a problem, you get to the mindset of ‘I know I can do it, I've solved problems and I can do this.' Then It's about nurturing that competency."

Barton will present his workshop at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Marcos de Niza High School, 6000 S. Lakeshore Drive in Tempe.
