Religious centers in Ahwatukee Foothills are offering a variety of camps and classes to kids of all ages throughout the summer. These programs are designed to open spirituality, increase knowledge of the Bible and bring kids together during the long summer months.

Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 S. 48th St., will offer Beach Camp for teens, a retreat to California for four days in July. Colin Noonen, director of the youth ministry, said retreats like this can help build a child’s spirituality. The theme of the camp is “be still.”

“Not just with kids, but for everyone, life can get crazy and super busy,” Noonen said. “The Bible is specific. It says ‘be still’ and ‘God is in control’ so it’s OK to slow down. I go back to my own … faith journey. Connecting and building the relationships I built can be traced back to camps like these.”

The cost is $250 for Beach Camp and it goes from July 18 to 22.

There are also options for younger children. Family of Christ Learning Center, 3501 E. Chandler Blvd., is offering an eight-week course through July 29, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday. This camp revolves around a different theme each week. Sue Nelson, director of Family of Christ Learning Center, said they also focus on a specific story from the Bible each week.

“We dress up and, for example, next week our theme is ‘Superheroes,’ so it’s just fun for the kids,” Nelson said. “What’s neat is we have a lot of new kids that don’t normally come here and I definitely think they are enjoying it.”

The kids rotate through the classes, which include art, music, math and science.

“I like going to different classes,” Lauren Matz, 5, said. “It’s fun to learn and play with my friends.”

The cost is $20 per day for the camp or $75 for the Foothills Baptist Church, 15450 S. 21st St., offers a Vacation Bible School for kids ages 4 years old through fifth grade. The camp will be conducted during the week of July 11 from 9 a.m. to noon and has a Broadway theme, which is integrated into different activities. They work on the creative side of producing a musical.

“They rotate to music, to the Bible, to mission class, to recreation,” said Penny Wilson, administrative assistant for Foothills Baptist Church. “They are constantly moving through different activities and it is a great way to spend the morning.”
