Summer classes kicked off this week at Pecos Community Center, and although they may be popular for children, instructors at the center want the community to realize that there are a variety of offerings for adults as well.

The Pecos Community Center has always catered its classes to both adults and children. However, after the city of Phoenix stopped mailing programs with class listings, the classes have received less exposure, according to the instructors.

Ahwatukee resident Carrie McNeish, the Line Dance and Muscle Mania instructor at Pecos, believes that this decrease in mass marketing has nearly dropped the center off the map.

“There’s people who still tell me, ‘I didn’t even know this was here,” McNeish said. “I don’t think they realize what we have to offer.”

The decrease in publicity has made it difficult to bring new clientele in, especially to adult classes, McNeish said. But on top of the various selections available to youth, the Pecos Center actually offers many classes for adults. This summer, classes such as jujitsu, ballroom dancing, Spanish, yoga at all levels, Zumba at all levels, and McNeish’s Line dance and Muscle Mania classes are all open for adult registration.

The summer session goes until Aug. 4, with both daytime and evening classes offered to fit into any schedule.

Only 5 years old, the Pecos Community Center, 17010 S. 48th St., has new and quality equipment available to those enrolled in classes. The center’s dance and fitness classroom features full-wall mirrors and hardwood flooring, while its gym has the largest assortment of equipment in Ahwatukee.

Those wishing to register for classes, or looking for a complete list of classes, can either visit the front office at the center or go to www.phoenix.gov/parks and click the “Pecos” link.
