The Ahwatukee Foothills community has seen events for Feed My Starving Children in the past, but one coming up at Mountain View Lutheran Church puts a new spin on fundraising for the organization that produces nutritional meals for children for 19 cents.
The Ahwatukee Hunger Hunt is a scavenger hunt on Saturday, Sept. 25 that organizers hope will go a long way in securing funds for an upcoming packing event.
Individuals or teams of up to five people can register from now until the day of the event for $100 per team or $25 per person. Just about every cent will go directly to FMSC.
For the Hunger Hunt, teams will search Ahwatukee Foothills for 100 items. Each item has a specific point value and the teams with the highest combined point values will be awarded gift certificates for On the Border. Each person on the team with the highest point total will receive $40.
Some of the 100 items are objects that participants will have to take pictures with, so each team is required to have a digital camera.
"Nothing has to be purchased, everything can be found for free," said Jennifer Ensley, organizer of the Hunger Hunt. "We thought this would be a great fundraiser for the community to get involved with and excited about."
The first-time event has open registration up until Sept. 25 when the hunt begins at 6:30 p.m.
The next packing event, in which volunteers come in and put together FMSC's signature 19-cent nutritional meal, is Nov. 17-20. Ensley said organizers hope to have 2,500 volunteers pack 500,000 meals over the course of the weekend.
"We ask people to donate whatever they can," she said. "It's such a great cause, and we get such a positive response from the community."

Participants must be 18 years old or have a parent or guardian with them. Teams must also have a vehicle to transport them to various spots around Ahwatukee Foothills.
