In an effort to get ahead of the curve in entrepreneurship and student success, South Mountain Community College (SMCC) has appointed long-time Ahwatukee Foothills center associate dean Dr. Cheryl Crutcher to a new position.

Now serving as the associate dean of foundation relations and development as of Feb. 4, Crutcher will oversee fundraising and development efforts at SMCC as well as having involvement in the Maricopa Community College Foundation’s 50th Anniversary capital campaign.

The campaign, now under way, is expected to be completed by 2015, as is attempting to raise $50 million for the district, where 10 colleges will take shares.

“We are excited, this is the first time the college has had a dedicated position like this,” said Rob Price, a spokesman for SMCC. “It’s been a need for a long time, but we had never had resources to move it forward.”

Community-based activities and fundraising events are planned for the Ahwatukee area in the near future, though details haven’t been confirmed, according to Price.

If SMCC gets its shares from the capital campaign in the next few years, Price said the college wants to focus on an entrepreneurship initiative that would support small businesses and a student success initiative that would provide new services.

After dedicating the past 11 years to the Ahwatukee center, which is still in its shared location with Horizon Community Learning Center, Crutcher said she is excited for a new opportunity.

“It’s exciting to be able to get to know the four communities the school serves,” she added.
