The East Valley Marines of Detachment 1296 were instrumental in arranging for the donation of a car to Iraq veteran Richard Moreno, who had two deployments to Iraq.

He was with 1st Battalion 2nd Marines as Infantry. He is now rated at a 100 percent disability by the VA and was recently involved in a motorcycle accident where his bike was a total loss. He then had no transportation until the unit stepped in to assist him with the Toyota donation.

The 2014 elected officers for the detachment were inducted at the March meeting by Bill Ebright and Pat Connell, representing the Department of Arizona’s Marine Corps League. Elected officers for Detachment 1296 are: Rick Schwartz, commandant; Dave Lott, senior vice commandant; Dave Minick, junior vice commandant; and Chuck Corning, judge advocate general.

In order to be able to continue to provide assistance like this and to help other Arizona Wounded Warriors, the East Valley Marines is sponsoring a golf tournament on Friday, April 25, at the Bear Creek Golf Course, 500 E. Riggs Road in Chandler. Visit their website, www.eastvalleymarines.org, to register for the event or to become a sponsor.

• Denise Landers Lott is an associate member of the East Valley Marines, Detachment 1296. The unit meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Sun Lakes Chapel.
