This time of year employees at Synergy HomeCare aren’t just following daily routines of the seniors in their care, they’re often going above and beyond to work as elves for the senior citizens they take care of daily.
“The holidays can be a challenging time for seniors, and many seniors can feel stressed and unhappy because they can’t get around like they used to,” said Rick Basch, president of SYNERGY HomeCare. “Their families may not live close enough to help them decorate the house or shop for gifts. Our caregivers pick up the slack for our aging friends who can’t do it on their own anymore.”
Elder’s Elves, as Synergy likes to call them, do everything from shopping and wrapping gifts to decorating the home and cooking holiday meals.
It’s been a blessing for Ahwatukee Foothills resident Elisa Jimenez, who has 11 children nearby but it was only with the coaxing of her daily caretaker, Denise Coronado, that she decided to decorate her home for Christmas this year. It’s a tradition she has never missed in the past, but it’s getting difficult physically and this is her first year without her husband.
Coronado set up the tree, decorated it, and put lights on the outside of the home.
“I’ve seen so many photos of her during the holidays,” Coronado said. “She has so many pictures. I saw everyone else putting up their decorations and it was a little sad here without a tree.”
Each year Jimenez throws a big Christmas Eve dinner with her family and neighbors and serves more than 600 tamales. This year, thanks to Synergy, her house will be ready.
Brenda Smith, client care manager for Synergy, said it’s not unusual for Synergy employees to go above and beyond for their clients during the holidays. She was a caregiver herself at one time and recalls helping a client make a scrapbook for Christmas.
“It feels wonderful,” she said. “It was really fun to be a part of something like that.”
SYNERGY HomeCare is a national in-home care provider with caregivers from coast-to-coast. The company cares for seniors in their own homes year-round, but recognizes the need for extra help around the holidays.
