Students and staff at Kyrene Altadeña Middle School are hosting a fundraiser dinner for their beloved choir teacher this week.

After long-time teacher Linda Potts was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer around December, the school community began making bracelets and T-shirts to raise money.

“Even high school students bought our shirts,” said Annie Saccoman, athletic secretary. “It has really reached out there.”

Students and staff at Altadeña wear the teal-colored shirts every Wednesday — with her favorite quote, “It is what it is,” printed on them.

More than 230 tickets have already been sold for Potts’ benefit dinner at Fired Up Grill. Pasta, salad and bread will be served from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

“It’s so amazing, people have been so generous already,” said Saccoman. “She’s so loved.”

Potts began teaching sixth through eighth grades at the school when it opened in 1995. Weekly chemotherapy has been part of her treatment, expected to last until next January.

Seeking to help Potts both financially and spiritually, Saccoman said she hopes more people will come out to help their cause.

“She’s a beautiful individual, I don’t know anyone like her,” Saccoman said.

Fired Up Grill is located at 7131 W. Ray Road, Suite 45, in Chandler. Tickets will be available at the door on May 15 for $5.
