Pastor Scott Martz said he is excited for his congregation to host a service in its own building again after flooding caused the church to be relocated for nine weeks.

Lamb of God Lutheran Church near Desert Foothills Parkway and Chandler Boulevard will be back for regular services this Sunday, Aug. 26.

In June, a supply line to one of the women’s restroom toilets broke and nearly flooded the entire floor space.

“Ninety percent of the floor was under about an inch of water,” said Martz, who was out of town on vacation at the time.

A friend of Martz had stopped by the church to visit him, and discovered water coming out of the doors. Once Martz found out, he was able to send out help to the church.

“It caused extensive damage,” Martz said. “But we are finally wrapping up the reconstruction and will be celebrating our return to worship.”

Since the flood, the church’s congregation has been gathering in The Foothills Golf Club’s theater room.

Martz, who has been a pastor since 1994, said the coordinators at the golf club had been very gracious.

After a month of coming up with a settlement from the church’s insurance company and an additional month working with a general contractor, Martz said, he is excited to bring church-goers back into their own facility.

“The flood was just so unexpected,” Martz said. “I mean who would think of a flood in a church on a top of a hill in the middle of June?”

Despite the inconvenience, the church’s near 100 members saw the situation’s silver lining.

Martz said the group took advantage of not having to be in their facility in order to worship and took on some extra projects.

He quoted Romans 8:28 that says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to his promises.”

The “all things” includes the unexpected things and difficult things, he added.

“The ‘all things’ includes floods.”

Lamb of God Lutheran Church is located at 599 E. Chandler Blvd. The Sunday service is at 9:30 a.m.
