About five years ago when Children of Hope Preschool needed funds to install sprinklers, staff and volunteers were able to raise about half needed to pay for the expensive price tag through the help of the community.

The preschool was able to collect about $35,000 in five years, and will be hosting its Second Western Day this weekend as a big “thank you” to Ahwatukee Foothills.

“We decided we needed to thank the community, and that’s what we started last year,” said Desiree Wallin, marketing board president for the school.

Located within Esperanza Lutheran Church, the annual event will be hosted in the church’s parking lot and will feature vendors, raffle prizes, food and music from local acts like the Ahwatukee Children’s Choir, and activities for all ages.

Pony rides will be available for $3 a ride as well as a bounce house, a small petting zoo, and games for kids, all with a Western theme.

Breakfast food and hot dogs will be sold by Bad Dog hot dog vendor, frozen treats by Yoasis, and performances by Innerlight Dance are also in store for attendees.

In an attempt to engage with the surrounding community, Wallin said she hopes Ahwatukee will come to know the preschool better.

“Ahwatukee always wants to give, the problem is that they just don’t know we’re here,” she said.

Western Day will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Esperanza Lutheran Church, 2601 E. Thunderhill Place, this Saturday, March 23. It’s free to attend.
