For the past six years the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA’s Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors (Y OPAS) has hosted its annual used book sale and has seen much growth in the community fundraiser.

This year’s book sale will take place on Oct. 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ahwatukee YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane, where book prices will range from 50 cents to $2.

After 2 p.m., all books will be marked half price or customers can purchase a grocery bag filled with books for $5.

According to the Y OPAS press release, the event is in conjunction with Make-a-Difference Day and the organization celebrates the day by raising funds to ensure the continuation of the program.

Judy Lewisohn, Y OPAS program manager, said the book sale is also a way for the Y OPAS to generate funds to continue with the services they give to local seniors, which they do free of charge.

Volunteers of Y OPAS assist local seniors with daily errands such as transportation to medical appointments, shopping, caregiver and friendly visiting.

Lewisohn added that the book sale continues to see growth each year, with last year being the best year by receiving more than 4,000 books and generating $2,100 in sales.

“We have a fantastic group of volunteers to take the books in, sort them so they’re in some kind of order,” she said.

Other activities going on during the day include a spin-a-thon, swim meet, sporting events and the MidFirst Bank coin truck will match coin donations upwards of $1,000.

The Jamba Juice truck will be present to provide early-morning refreshments.

“It’s a great and fun event to organize,” Lewisohn said.

Individuals interested in making a donation to the book drive can drop off their books at the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, encyclopedia sets or magazines will not be accepted.
