Performing popular music through different eras and decades, all six choirs at Desert Vista High School will be hosting a concert Friday afternoon and evening.

The choir department’s annual Pops Concert will be the school’s spring concert this year, which previously was performed as an end-of-the-year event.

“We decided this year to mix things up,” said Brittney Monus, a senior and A Cappella choir member.

Directed by Andrew De Valk, the show will feature music popular throughout the country like Manhattan jazz, 1940s swing, 1980s pop, and 1970s R&B, from the choirs ranging from beginning to advanced levels.

Accompanying the school’s choirs like Vox, Bella Voce, A Cappella, and more, about 10 specialty acts of solos, duets and groups will perform.

“It’s more like show choir with upbeat, fun music, and different costumes,” Monus said.

For each performance, the students have prepared choreography and costumes into the acts. About 60 students auditioned last month to perform as a specialty act.

With this year being her last year to perform at Pops, Monus said as a long-time choir member she is excited to see how this year will turn out.

“This one requires more work on top of learning the music,” she said. “A lot of work goes into making this show.”

The Pops Concert will have showings at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8 in the Desert Vista auditorium, 16440 S. 32nd St. Afternoon tickets will be available at the door for $5 and evening prices will be $10 for adults, $7 for students, and children 7 or under get in free.
