Dylan Fischer, a varsity football player at Desert Vista High School, recently committed to playing football for the United States Naval Academy after graduation.

After visiting Annapolis, Md., while a freshman, Fischer’s mom, Julia, said he fell in love with the campus and made it a goal to apply for the academy.

“I’ve always been a proponent of wanting my kids to go away,” said Julia, a former sixth-grade teacher at Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School. “I wanted them to have that experience of a new place.”

Though Fischer was invited to play by the team’s coaches, he is still going through the academy’s academic application process that includes interviews, letters of recommendation, and nominations from local senators and congressmen.

So far, Fischer is awaiting the interview phase and is reaching out to Sen. Jon Kyl and Sen. John McCain.

But for now back home in Ahwatukee Foothills, Fischer is planning to start winter season track with the Foothills Track Club, also attempting to break a shot put record for track and field.

The 50-year-old state record is 69 feet, and Fischer hopes to at least make it in the top five for attempts.

While Fischer equally loves participating in track and football, according to Julia, he especially loves the camaraderie of football.

Candidates applying to the Naval Academy are usually notified of their status in April each year.

“He just decided that it’s a beautiful place to go to school and serve his country,” Julia added.
