The Kyrene Foundation will partner up with a Denny’s location in Chandler this Saturday in efforts to celebrate the remodeling of the business and further the fundraising for the Stuff the Bus drive.

Stuff the Bus is an annual fundraiser put on by the Kyrene Foundation that aids low-income families by providing back-to-school items.

Items sought for the drive include backpacks, loose-leaf notebook paper, notebooks, colored folders, markers, calculators, colored pencils, crayons, glue sticks and kids scissors.

To celebrate the remodeling, the first 100 customers will receive a free Grand Slam plate, which includes two buttermilk pancakes, two eggs cooked to order, two bacon strips and two sausage links, and the first 50 customers who donate a backpack will receive a complimentary entrée valued at $10.

In addition, customers are invited to purchase a Denny’s apple pie, which the Kyrene Foundation will donate to families in need during its holiday drive. The first 100 customers to donate a pie will receive a complimentary Denny’s coffee mug.

Karla and John Piecuch, who own the Denny’s location, have been working with the Kyrene Foundation for the past four years with the Stuff the Bus drive along with the foundation’s holiday drive.

Karla said she was approached by a customer four years about the idea of teaming up with the Kyrene Foundation, and it blossomed from that point on.

“We wanted to certainly give away the free Grand Slams to remind people that we are here, but we have helped out the Kyrene Foundation for the past four years and we feel that’s an essential component of who we are,” she said. “There’s a large population that are in need and some people are in need of a little assistance. We want to continue to promote the message that the Kyrene Foundation is promoting about families having a tough time.”

Amanda Nosbisch, prevention manager for Kyrene School District, said she’s excited to see the community support for the Kyrene Foundation and the Stuff the Bus drive.

The Grand Slam Celebration will start at 9 a.m. this Saturday, July 12, at the Denny’s located at 7400 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler, off Interstate 10.
