This year’s Taste of Kyrene hit a new milestone: It was the Kyrene Foundation’s most successful fundraiser ever. It also represented the first time in recallable history that a single, $10 bid by Councilman Cory Woods netted the top auction prize, a weeklong Puerto Vallarta vacation.

With 400 guests at the Feb. 24 event, district volunteers, primed and prodded by MarJean Steinkamp, raised more than $45,000 through ticket sales, auctioned-off baskets, raffle tickets and silent auction treasures, the latter of which accounted for $20,000 of the total.

Superintendent Dr. David Schauer addressed the guests, noting several programs had been implemented in years past as a result of efforts by the Kyrene Foundation, a non-profit 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization that sponsored this year’s event.

Proceeds from the event will benefit all 25 Kyrene schools and the Kyrene Family Resource Center. Funding will go to various preventive efforts; staff, student and friend recognition and awards; student scholarships for extra-curricular and student-enrichment programs such as sports, arts and academic support.

DVHS student earns highest rank in National Forensic League

Michael Mazzella from Desert Vista High School has earned the National Forensic League’s degree of Premier Distinction, the highest student degree in the honor society. A degree of Premier Distinction reflects sustained excellence in classroom activities, competition rounds and service projects. Students may earn points in six separate categories: speech, debate, congress, service, district, and national. Only about four hundred students out of NFL’s 112,000 student members receive the degree of Premier Distinction each year – about 1/3 of 1 percent.

DVHS wins 1st place 8th time in state tournament

Congratulations to the Thunder Speech Theater and Debate Company, who competed at the 5A AIA state tournament. The tournament hosted 15 of the largest schools in Arizona to compete for the spot as the No. 1 school in the state. Desert Vista won first place sweepstakes with a 92 point lead, winning state for the eighth year in a row. Instead of a single representative, they sent seniors who represent various groups and events on the team. Their service is an inspiration for years to come and they truly have become the next generation of giants.
