A well-known McDonald’s location in Ahwatukee at Elliot Road and 51st Street will be moving across Interstate 10 at the end of the month, after 30 years in the same location.

The new building, going up at Elliot Road and Priest Drive where the old Coco’s restaurant was, will be less than a mile away from the current location.

“It’s a project we’ve been working on for a number of years in terms of how we upgrade that site,” said owner Ken Clement. “Because we had a limited lease on that site and without, at that time, being able to negotiate a longer lease with the landlord, we decided to move it because we wanted to update the facility.”

Many McDonald’s across Arizona have been remodeled in the last three to four years, including Clement’s other McDonald’s location at 48th Street and Warner Road, which was remodeled more than a year ago. The remodel involves upgrading the interior as well as exterior. If possible, many sites are adding a double drive-thru window. That might not have been possible at the current location, Clement said, because it is in a fairly tight space.

“That restaurant currently does a high percentage of drive-thru so it would have made it more customer comfortable if we could move them through quicker,” he said. “It’s not only creating a new branded look for our building, it’s also attempting to provide a more efficient operation.”

Clement said he expects the new location to open in early October. It’s unknown what will happen to the old facility.
