Seniors at the Pecos Senior Center were treated to a special presentation last week when Project BRAVE performed, “He Called it a Dream.”

The Jan. 16 event included a power-point presentation on the civil rights journey shown with live music and excerpts from the two most famous speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I Have a Dream” and “The Mountain Top.”

Rod Ambrose, a Phoenix Parks and Recreation employee and director of Project BRAVE, conceived and directed the program. Ambrose met and marched with King in the ’60s in Chicago and became a “child of the movement,” as he calls it. He was one of 20 African American students to integrate an all-white ivy-league high school in the ’60s. Now for years he has led Project BRAVE as they share the message of Martin Luther King, Jr. with schools and community groups.

“The inspiration is always the same,” Ambrose said. “It is to do our small measure to reduce the violent intention in our society and to engage all people in an exercise that will allow them to experience in some way, vicariously, the civil rights move, the mentality and the experience… I’m eternally inspired by the movement and always want to reflect it again and again and again.”

Project BRAVE performs, “He Called it a Dream,” year-round throughout Phoenix and the Valley, mostly during school assemblies.

BRAVE is an acronym for Bringing Reality About Violence Education. The program is funded by a juvenile Justice Grant and has four components of prevention education: Workshops, assemblies, the youth sub committee and theatrical presentations. The goal of the group is to increase public awareness about the dangers of risky choices by teaching healthy alternatives to violence.
