Tempe Union High School District’s governing board made some of the last revisions to the 2012-2017 Strategic Plan during a study session last week, which could be approved on Nov. 7.

The strategic plan pending approval includes a revised vision statement and now puts an emphasis on community. The plan gives the district an idea of what areas to improve within schools as a whole and specific objectives under those goals.

In the presentation brought before the board and members of the public on Oct. 24, student achievement, district resources, staffing and community are now key goal areas.

If the plan is approved by the board next week, a more detailed analysis, called the operational plan, would then drop down to goal committees for implementation.

The plan adopted at the board level is referred to as a public plan while the second analysis is known as the operational.

Though some board members felt that the term “public” plan inferred that the operational plan is private, Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Baca ensured the word play doesn’t reflect the actual purpose.

“We wanted to be meticulous in being sure we were transparent with the plan,” Baca said.

The board began a series of revision meetings with one each in March, August and September. The final presentation of the strategic plan will be brought before the board for approval next week.
