When the flour settled and the cooking utensils were holstered, Kyrene de la Estrella third-grader Leah Kahldon and her "Yummy Fruit Burritos" were the last ones standing.
Kahldon competed against 15 other Kyrene elementary school students in the Future Chefs: Healthy Snack Challenge Feb. 14 in the Kyrene Aprende Middle School cafeteria. The competition was in the form of Iron Chef in that her dish was judged based on factors like originality, taste, presentation and use of healthy ingredients.
Her mother, Leslie Kahldon, said Leah modified a recipe she "sort-of" liked for the competition.
"She helps me a lot at home," Leslie said. "We talk about how cooking at home can be healthier because you can put the ingredients you like into a recipe instead of being at the mercy of a restaurant."
Her winning recipe will be entered into a national competition by Sodexo, which is partnered with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative to end childhood obesity.
