Homes and businesses close to the I-10 freeway in Ahwatukee Foothills experienced an hour without power early Monday morning. Crews from SRP dealt with the problem of an open transformer, according to an automated message on the SRP emergency phone line.
The brunt of the power outage was on the other side of the freeway, in the cities of Chandler and Tempe. Chandler Boulevard and Elliott Road were the north and south boundaries and the freeway and Rural Road were the east and west.
A spokesperson for SRP said that while there is no significant increase in the amount of power outages during the summer months, they are more noticed.
“It is something that we are always aware of and work hard to address as soon as possible,” said SRP spokesperson Patty Garcia-Likens. “The bad news of course is that we will have customers without power. It is a redundant system and so what usually happens is when there is some kind of a mechanical failure we will send out a troubleshooter who is on call 24 hours a day.”
The troubleshooter will determine if he can fix the issue or if he needs a crew. Garcia-Likens said that many times, because it is a redundant system, most of their customers are back in power while the issue is being fixed.
The power went out in Ahwatukee Foothills, Chandler and Tempe around 12:15 a.m. The automated message said it was estimated the power would be back on by 2:30 a.m. but for many it returned by approximately 1:30 a.m.
SRP offers suggestion on what to do in case of a power outage. The recommend having easy access to items such as a first aid kit, fresh batteries, bottled water and special needs items for infants, elderly and disabled family members.
They also offer preventative tips such as:
• Know where to find each utility shut off - electricity, water and gas. Know how to turn each off. Have the proper tools to do so, and know where they are located.
• Consider making a safety preparedness plan for your family. Such a plan would include a list and location of the above items. Be sure that you are prepared to meet the special needs of infants, and elderly or disabled family members. Also plan how you will care for any pets.
