Outside parties and organizations can now use facilities within the Kyrene School District for less than half of the previous costs after the district’s governing board approved lowered rates on Tuesday.

After a series of meetings between district officials and representatives from youth sports leagues to discuss field costs, district staff worked to settle the community concern of the possibility of displaced teams.

“We worked to develop a system that we feel really good about, and so do the teams,” Kyrene superintendent Dr. David Schauer said.

Effective July 1, the new rate structure no longer charges for custodial services or supplies during the weekdays. Facility users will be charged light fees based on actual use and the district is looking into the ability of lighting just one field instead of multiple fields at one time. Restrooms are also part of the district’s coverage and won’t be a cost to groups using fields.

For a four-hour day of baseball field rental, the district’s previous rate structure charged a total cost of $242 for field, restroom, custodial services and lights. The new rates cut down costs to $100 for a four-hour day.

Future field improvements discussed could include new lights that are energy efficient and would reduce spillage into the neighboring homes from 75 percent to 20 percent. New LED lights could also be an option to Centennial and Altadeña middle schools in Ahwatukee, with Akimel A-al serving as a pilot.

“It seemed like the results that came about were very appreciated by the stakeholders and ended up being a win-win situation for all,” said governing board president Beth Brizel.
