Mountain Park Senior Living will be offering a nearly free support group service for local family members who are providing assisted living care to a loved one.

The six-week class begins July 31 and is open to the public. Each week during the two-hour session, participants will receive a lesson in the different aspects, including emotional guidance and how to manage the stress of caregiving to a family member.

April Leathers, outreach coordinator for Mountain Park, said she has seen how taking care of a loved one can affect people, and said that one of the best remedies is to talk about it with others who are going through the same thing.

“This will be a good group to know they are not alone and these emotions they are having, other people are having them as well,” Leathers said. “They can feel guilty for getting angry when, say, their husband who has Alzheimer’s asks the same question every five minutes. It’s really good to open up to other people about what they are going through.”

They use materials called Powerful Tools for Caregivers, and the $5 fee goes toward the book that accompanies the lessons throughout the course.

Leathers said they have listened to the needs of caregivers in the community and have designed the program around those needs to make it a fully comprehensive experience. They have been speaking with the local community organization, Connecting to Serve, and looking at the YOPAS (Outreach Program for Ahwatukee Seniors) program in an effort to bring something new as a support group for seniors, Leathers said.

The course is open to the community and anyone who can benefit from such a support group. Caregivers and those they are supporting are both invited.

The class will begin on Tuesday, July 31 at Mountain Park Senior Living, 4475 E. Knox Road. To find out more or to RSVP, call (480) 619-5492.
