Two teens from Ahwatukee Foothills were recently presented with scholarships from the U.S. Marine Corps last week, valued at $150,000 each.
Jessica Zhu, of Mountain Pointe High School, and Tyler Angell, of Desert Vista High School, were selected for the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship based on academic excellence, physical fitness and moral character. The students were awarded during halftime of last week’s Mountain Pointe vs. Desert Vista basketball game.
Zhu will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Angell will attend Carnegie Mellon University, said spokesman Cpl. Tyler Bolken.
The prestigious and highly selective scholarship is awarded to students every year.
After college, the recipients will receive their commissioning as 2nd lieutenants in the U.S. Marines.
“These students make an impact on their community and are now making the commitment to their country,” said Maj. Michael Ford, a commanding officer and presenter of the scholarships, in a press release.
