Ahwatukee Foothills resident Mark Moushey saw a lack of male participation when he was first learning about the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. He took it upon himself to change that and bring awareness, and raise funds for the organization that does so much for those affected by breast cancer.

That was six years ago, and ever since he has participated in the three-day, 60-mile event that sees thousands of people come together and raises millions of dollars for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“There are people out there fighting breast cancer, so I thought, ‘I can walk 60 miles for it,’” Moushey said. “When you hear stories, it’s not just about the people directly affected, it’s about the families, the friends, co-workers, and more. Everyone knows someone that is affected by breast cancer.”

The past three years, Moushey has walked with Team THRIVR, and collectively they have raised about $450,000, making them one of the most successful teams for Arizona’s 3-Day event.

Of his experience in Team THRIVR, of which there are survivors and family members of those who have passed on, he said, “I have been privileged and honored to be in the inner circle.”

Moushey hopes to encourage more men to take part in the event. He said that of the 2,000 or so walkers every year at the Phoenix event, only about 200 to 300 are men.

“It’s embarrassing to see the lack of male participation,” Moushey said. “It’s three days of walking and spending time with your circle of friends, but then there are the other people who tell you these of survivors that blow your mind. It’s a humbling experience.”

Moushey is hosting the third annual Jam Fest at CK’s on April 7 from noon to 4 p.m. There will be a live auction, at least three live bands, and prize raffles for guests. A portion of sales will be donated by CK’s to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. For more information, visit www.the3day.org.
