A few weeks ago, I was having a really rough day. That's how life goes sometimes. It shouldn't have thrown me for such a loop, but it did. I dropped off my son at a class far out in the East Valley that morning and decided to go for a hike in the Superstition Mountains while I waited for him.
On the drive out to Lost Dutchman State Park, I asked the Lord to remind me that He was with me. I have marked verses in my Bible that say He will never leave me nor forsake me and that He is always with me, and I believe they are true. But I desperately desired a little tangible confirmation that day. I put on my sunglasses because the sun was getting bright, and I flipped on the radio just as the lyrics of the song that was playing told about how He lights up the sky to show me He is with me.
The timing of that song was impressive, but I still wanted more. I told God I would love it if a helicopter flew over my head to symbolize His watching over me, but that I knew it was silly to ask for such a sign.
I enjoyed a beautiful hike and forgot all about my request. My melancholy mood was lifting. I still had some time before I had to pick up my son, so I got my Bible study lesson out of the car, sat at a picnic table and began to work on it. I was deep in thought as I pondered a question for which in my heart I knew the only answer I could write had to be "total surrender," when suddenly I was startled by - you guessed it - the sound of a helicopter! It came out of seemingly nowhere, flew low and directly over the table where I was sitting, then proceeded across the field and disappeared into the distance.
I find it intriguing that God waited until I got my focus solely on Him and surrendering to Him before He obliged me with the helicopter. Did He have to do that for me? Absolutely not. Did my faith get a huge boost that day? Yep. The most likely way to "hear" from God is by reading the Bible, so I know this was very special.
I remember another time in my life when I desperately wanted to know the Lord was with me. I thought I was a Christian because I was going to church and was convinced I was doing all the "right" things. But there came a day when I was at the end of my rope and I cried out to the Lord. Was He was really there? He was faithful to answer. There was no helicopter overhead that day, but I was aware of a love and peace and forgiveness flowing through my heart as it never had before.
In Jeremiah 29:13, the Lord says, "You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart." Maybe you have never "talked" to God before, but you honestly want to know if He is the real deal. Perhaps you have an issue for which you need some answers, but you have never really asked God what He has to say about it. In Jeremiah 33:3, He says, "Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and wondrous things you do not know."
Perhaps this Christmas you are wondering about the whole baby Jesus story. Is it true? Did God actually come to earth as a baby? Did He grow up and was He nailed to a cross? Was He raised from the dead? Does He have the power to forgive sins and offer a peace that the world cannot? If you really want to know, ask Him. He probably won't answer by sending a helicopter, but He will answer. God will reveal Himself to a heart that is sincerely seeking Him.
