A local business owner and a muralist are teaming up for a fundraiser to bring the Kyrene Family Resource Center some much needed support.
At Cake Café, 4910 E Ray Road, owner Bobbie Griego and Suzanne Whitaker, of Passion for Murals, are hosting a donation event in which residents can drop off a canned food item or toiletry and enjoy a mini cupcake or sample some of the original coffee blends on the house.
The Kyrene Family Resource Center benefits families who are struggling financially and need help with food, clothing and other necessities.
As a Kyrene parent, Whitaker knows how important the resource center can be to those who rely on it. She also knows that the holidays can be a time when the shelves are far from stocked.
"I realized how much they are in need for products, and they need them sooner rather than later," she said. "We felt that this event would bring more visitors and donations to the center. Any word they can get out to help them is good. It's close to my heart as a Kyrene parent."
Griego, who opened Cake Café five years ago, said she wanted to do a fundraiser for the holiday season and immediately jumped on board when her friend brought up the resource center.
"We're always trying to think of different ways to benefit our businesses as well as someone else," she said. "I thought this would be a great organization to do a fundraiser for."
Whitaker, an Ahwatukee Foothills resident who does murals for residences and businesses, will be painting faces for customers as well. You can visit her website at www.Passion4Murals.com.
The event will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20.
