Who will take care of your pets if something should happen to you?

It is a question the Arizona Animal Welfare League and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (AAWL & SPCA) wants pet owners to think about.

For those with questions about the possibilities available, can attend a free seminar on Saturday in Ahwatukee Foothills.

"We are finding that people haven't really thought about this at length," spokeswoman Rochelle Tigner said. "Should anything happen, like if you are unable to care for yourself, let alone your dog, and the pet has nowhere to go, a lot of times they will be taken to kill shelters. What this is really about is getting people to think about, ‘What will happen to my animal if I can't take care of them?'"

The organization will discuss topics like basic estate planning for your pets, special concerns, such as who will care for them, when is a Power of Attorney needed, and planning for pets with special needs.

They will also talk about how a trust can be set up so the AAWL and SPCA will care for the pet until they can find a home.

"You would be sure the animal goes to AAWL, foster care, or put it up for adoption. Or you can designate someone to take care of it," Tigner said. "AAWL is about saving lives and this is another thing that can help save the lives of more animals."

The Nov. 19 seminar will take place at Pecos Community Center, 17010 S. 48th St., from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

There is no charge, but an RSVP is required to Emily Asche at easche@aawl.org or call (602) 273-6852, ext. 106.
