With little chance of rain for the next few weeks, Ahwatukee Foothills residents can safely take advantage of a local car wash that will benefit a nonprofit organization and help a local mom raise some funds for the New York City Marathon.

The “Yummy Mommys,” as the group of Ahwatukee Foothills runners call themselves, will be washing cars in purple tutus and singing songs in an effort to reach a fundraising goal of $2,620.

“We are Ahwatukee moms, all friends, and most of us are runners, where Nicole is our marathoner,” said Anne Neal, who will be helping at the car wash on Saturday.

Nicole Schenk is the local runner who will be traveling to New York City in November to run the world-famous marathon.

“She’s our strongest runner,” Neal said. “She runs a lot of races and is an accomplished runner.”

She is raising funds for the organization Team for Kids, a New York Road Runners-sponsored charity that provides health and fitness programs to low-income schools, and proceeds from tomorrow’s car wash will benefit the organization.

The car wash will take place June 9 in the Yoasis parking lot, 1304 E. Chandler Blvd., from 8 to 11 a.m. Car washes cost $4 and there will be a bake sale going on at the same time.

For more information, to purchase tickets in advance, or to learn more about volunteering, contact Neal at (480) 383-3969 or Schenk at (480) 209-9348.

Currently, Team for Kids programs serve nearly 100,000 children each year in more than 400 schools across New York City, the nation, and South Africa. To find out more about Team for Kids, visit www.nyrrf.org/get_involved/team_for_kids/index.asp.
