Gearing up for its Easter celebration, Central Christian Church’s Ahwatukee campus aimed to show members and attendees about generosity with a reverse donation.

Central’s Ahwatukee and other campuses handed out nearly $180,000 during Sunday service a few weeks ago as part of its “Made for More” series.

“It was time for us to be the church we’re asked to be,” said lead pastor of the Ahwatukee campus, Corey Bullock. “It comes out of this mantra, ‘There’s more to life than me.’”

Packed into envelopes were $20, $50 and $100 bills that were handed out during the church’s usual time for offerings.

The deal, however, was that each recipient would use the money to give to someone else.

“The best way to get people to understand the act of generosity is taking (that money) and blessing others,” Bullock said.

The money, he added, came from regular donations over a period of a few months.

Noting dozens of surprised and shocked reactions, Bullock said hundreds of stories came back to the pastor and leadership team about how they used the money, some even adding to the amount they were given.

Central has church campuses in Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Glendale, Mesa and Queen Creek.

On the project’s website, stories such as people giving money to fast-food workers at drive-thru windows, to filling up gas tanks for travelers filled the page.

Though Bullock said the church is not planning another reverse donation any time soon, he said he hopes that the people of Central would be challenged to live generously.

“This life is not about us, we are blessed to be a blessing,” he said.
