As part of the recently passed state budget which included an expanded Medicaid plan expected to reach some 350,000 Arizonans, local school districts are expected to receive inflation funding next fiscal year.

The Arizona Senate last week passed the state’s budget that included about $34 million for K-12 funding, a 1.8 percent inflation increase. Of those funds, more than a million could be given to Kyrene School District and Tempe Union High School District serving Ahwatukee.

As the Senate-approved budget heads to the House this week and the legislature next week, Kyrene could receive a little more than $1.5 million, according to district chief financial officer Jeremy Calles.

“It’s a little more than we were already expecting,” he said. “But the main thing for Kyrene is that the bond legislation is in the budget.”

Since the fall, the district has been curtailing spending and conducted a hiring freeze until the legislature makes a decision on whether or not school districts can bond based on the secondary assessed values.

If the state budget passes through the House and legislature, without a veto by the governor, the district could see about $1.1 million next school year.

“Now it’s just a matter of going through the process,” Calles said.

The state budget now moves to the House.
