Trena Mar helps out in Lynn Price's kindergarten classroom at Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary School "from the time the first bell rings until the last bell ends."

She is one of many dedicated volunteer aids who help out in classrooms across the Kyrene School District. To Price, Mar and others like her are invaluable after last year when funding for classroom aids was cut from the district's budget.

"Last year, the kids would not have been able to come as far and as fast as they did without the help of volunteers," Price said. "They are another pair of hands directing kids in a positive way."

Dolores Sadowniczak, another of Price's aids, has been helping out in the classroom for seven years, ever since her granddaughter began school there.

"When they did away with classroom aids, I thought, ‘Oh my God,' what are the teachers going to do?" Sadowniczak said. "But luckily there are a lot of people who love doing this and I think the school really appreciates what we are doing."

For Mar, her volunteering was a way of giving back to a school that her own daughter went through.

"They're not just teachers, they care," she said. "I go wherever they need me."
