Car lovers and animals lovers alike will find something to enjoy at the “Get Unleashed” event this Friday for the Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.

Guests will be able to enjoy classic cars on display, food from Sierra Bonita Grill, a preview of the new C7 Stingray Corvette and will also have a chance to meet some adoptable dogs from AAWL.

The animal rescue hosts “Get Unleashed” events annually across the Valley. When they had an opportunity to team up with the Bondurant School it seemed like a perfect fit.

“The more we looked into it the more we realized what a special time it was,” said Heidi Fransway, former board chair for AAWL. “Bob Bondurant is an animal lover... He loves the work we do with homeless pets. Second of all, Bob Bondurant turns 80 this year. He is an internationally recognized race car driver that just happens to live in our backyard. People come from all over the world to go to Bondurant School of Racing. It’s his 45th year of having the school. What a neat thing for us to bring his love of animals and his notoriety and couple it with our animal lover participants and supporters and bring out adoptable animals.”

Bondurant himself is expected to be at the event. Fransway said there are plans to celebrate Bondurant’s birthday and the 45th anniversary of his school. Also attending the event will be John and Sonia Breslow who donated $2 million to AAWL to build its Sonia Breslow Adoption Center. The adoption center has made it possible for AAWL to double its capacity. This year the shelter is on track to find homes for 5,000 pets, where three years ago they adopted out 1,500.

The event will be in the Bondurant Museum of the school, 20000 S. Maricopa Road, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. Tickets are limited. For an extra cost guests will have the option of taking a “hot lap” in a race car with a professional driver.

“We are doing something people don’t get to do very often,” Fransway said. “When you combine the experience with having the ability to adopt an animal and help it find its forever home and help raise money for a shelter that is reliant on private donations to help it survive, it’s a wonderful thing. My hope is people go away feeling good about the evening, feeling like they’ve done something fun for themselves and have helped the Arizona Animal Welfare League.”

Tickets are available for purchase online at aaw.org or by calling (480) 423-1511.
